Where Link-in-Bio Clicks Actually Go: Data From 921 Links

Every link-in-bio guide repeats the same advice: put your most important link first. We had the click data to check it, so we did. The top slot gets about a quarter of clicks, not the lion's share — and the number of links on your page changes almost nothing about how many clicks you get in total.

Every guide to link-in-bio pages repeats the same two pieces of advice. Put your most important link first. Add all your links so people can find everything.

We run a link-in-bio tool, which means we have the click data to check both. So we checked. The first link gets about a quarter of clicks, not the majority. And adding more links to your page does not get you more clicks — it just cuts the same attention into thinner slices.

Here is the data, how we measured it, and the mistake we nearly published.

What we measured

Everything below comes from Linkhiver's own analytics between 15 June and 23 August 2026:

  • 921 active links across real creator pages
  • 9,357 link clicks
  • 33,351 page views
  • 276 pages that got at least one click

This is our own users, not a survey and not the whole internet. Sample sizes are given for every number, and some of them are small. We would rather show you a small honest number than a big vague one.

The mistake we nearly published

Our first query was a simple sum: add up all clicks, see how many landed on each page's first link.

The answer came back 64.5%. A clean, quotable number that confirmed the conventional advice perfectly.

Then we looked at the distribution. Five pages accounted for 44% of all clicks. The largest single page had over a thousand on its own. So "64.5%" was not describing how people behave — it was describing how five high-traffic pages behave, with everyone else averaged into invisibility.

We ran it again a different way: calculate each page's percentages within itself, then take the median across pages. One page, one vote, no matter how much traffic it has.

64.5% became 24.5%. Same data, same day, two and a half times apart.

That gap is worth remembering any time you see a click statistic with no methodology attached — including ours. A total tells you what your biggest account did. A median tells you what a typical account did. For advice, you want the median.

Two things stand out.

The top slot is worth less than the advice implies. Positions 2 and 3 together (32.9%) beat position 1 on their own. If you have been agonising over which single link goes first, the stakes are lower than you think.

The decay is gentle, not a cliff. We expected position 4 and below to be effectively dead. They are not — each position gets roughly a fifth less than the one above it, steadily, all the way down. There is no point where the page falls off a ledge.

That second point matters, because it means the cost of a long page is not what people usually say it is. The bottom of your page is not invisible. Something else is happening instead.

Here is the same first-link share, grouped by how many links the page has. Sample: 136 pages with at least 5 clicks.

A three-link page sends 60% of its clicks to the top link. A page with seven or more sends under a quarter.

Some of that is just arithmetic — fewer slots means bigger slices. But the size of the effect is the useful part. Going from three links to seven doesn't trim your top link's share a little. It more than halves it.

The last two rows are based on 9 and 2 pages. Treat them as a direction, not a measurement.

This is the one that changed how we think about the product.

If a longer page split attention but captured more of it — more links, more chances something appeals — then long pages should collect more total clicks. We checked. Median total clicks per page, same groups:

Flat. A page with a dozen links gets about as many total clicks as a page with two.

We want to be careful here, because we made the opposite mistake an hour earlier. Using averages, this table looked dramatic: short pages appeared to get 83 clicks against 34 for longer ones, which would have made a great headline about how brevity wins. That gap was the same five high-traffic pages again, most of which happen to be short. On medians, the effect vanishes.

So the honest version is the boring one: the number of links on your page has little to do with how many clicks you get. Adding a link does not grow the pie. It re-cuts it.

What this actually means for your page

Putting the three findings together:

The question is not "what goes first." It is "does this link deserve a slot at all." Your visitors arrive with a roughly fixed amount of attention, and your page divides it. A link that nobody was going to click doesn't cost you nothing — it costs the links around it.

A short page concentrates. It does not amplify. Cutting from eight links to three won't get you more clicks overall. It will send a much larger share of the clicks you already get to the thing you care about. If the goal is "get people to my shop," that's the win. If the goal is "be a directory of everything I do," a longer page is fine — just don't expect it to increase your traffic.

Check your own numbers rather than trusting ours. Every audience is different, and ours is 276 pages. Any link-in-bio tool with per-link analytics will show you your own decay curve. Limitations, stated plainly

  • Our users, not the internet. 276 pages from one product. A different tool with a different audience could see a different curve.
  • Small samples in places. The position table is 30 pages. The 7–10 and 11+ rows are 9 and 2 pages respectively.
  • Correlation, not causation. People put their best link first, so position 1 is partly measuring "the link they already believed in" rather than the power of the position. We cannot separate those without an experiment, and we haven't run one.
  • Short window. Roughly ten weeks. Seasonal patterns would not show up.

FAQ

How many links should I have in my bio? Our data doesn't show a total-click penalty for having more links, so there is no magic number. What changes is concentration: with 1–3 links your top link takes about 60% of clicks; with 7 or more it takes under 25%. Choose based on whether you want one link to win or all of them to be findable.

Does the first link really get the most clicks? Yes, but by less than most advice implies — a median of 24.5% on pages with five or more links. Positions 2 and 3 combined get more than position 1 alone.

Do links at the bottom of the page get any clicks? Yes. The drop-off is gradual, roughly a fifth less per position, with no sudden cutoff. On our data position 6 still took 8% of a page's clicks.

Why do your numbers differ from other link-in-bio statistics? Often it's methodology. Summing all clicks across all accounts lets your biggest accounts speak for everyone — that approach gave us 64.5% for the top link where the median gives 24.5%. Ask how any click statistic was calculated before you plan around it.
